Weight Loss & Massage Therapy

In order to understand how Massage therapy assists the body in weight loss, first you must understand what happens in the body during and after the massage as well as the make-up of the body.

Our bodies are made up of about 55%-70% water. All of our organs contain water some up to 90%. As we move, our bodies “stir up” the water, the more we move the better the circulation, which allows the body to be more efficient at getting rid of excess weight.

Most of us today don’t move as much as we could or should.  Think about your day. Are you sitting at a desk answering phones or working on a computer? When you get home after work, do you sit on the couch and watch TV, or play on your laptop? Most of us do not have the activity in our lives to help our bodies’ burn excess energy stored in our fat cells. Remember fat turns into energy when the body needs it. Is your body storing too much energy? If it is, do you want or need to carry that around with you every day? I know from the experience of carrying around an extra 50 pounds that there will never be a time when I will need 50 pounds of extra energy in any given month or year for that matter. We get our energy boost every day by the foods we eat.

Massage is a passive workout. During the massage session, the muscles are subtly tensing and resting. This burns energy. An hour-long massage is about the equivalent to a 45-minute workout with some exceptions. A massage won’t build muscle mass. A massage will tone existing muscle mass.

A good therapeutic massage session will align the larger muscles and help them work more efficiently thus burning larger amounts of energy. This is where the weight loss begins. After the session the body’s circulation increases, allowing the body to get rid of some of the excess weight and toxins stored in the muscular system. This is the main reason after a massage you are told to drink extra water for the next 24 hours. The water helps to keep the body hydrated, allowing the circulation to continue getting rid of excess waste.

The best advice I give to my clients is to keep moving. Walking, Running, playing with the kids, whatever you can do to keep the body moving. Regular massage will assist the body’s movement and keep the muscular system firing properly for maximum burning potential. If the muscles are not aligned properly, only part of the muscle is doing the work and soon pain will set in.

So keep moving, get regular massage sessions, eat good foods in moderation and the weight will start to fall off effortlessly.
